 Characteristics of Scoria

To many people, small pieces of Scoria often resemble the ash found in a coal furnace. For this reason, Scoria has often been called cinder or lava rock. Scoria can actually come in a variety of colors from black all the way to a dark brown. It is often dark in color and has a lot of small porous cavities.

One of Scoria's uses has been in the production of cement. Because it weights far less than the usual types of gravel and sand used in cement production, cement made with Scoria sand (aka volcanic sand) has allowed the construction of buildings that use less steel. Since Scoria is porous and traps a lot of miniscule pockets of air, it also has greater insulation characteristics. This can save a lot of money by reducing the cost to heat and cool such a structure.
